témavezetés leírása
Carbohydrates are ubiquitous molecules in nature which play a key role in living organisms. In addition to being long-known nutrients and components of skeletal and connective tissues, they are general mediators of signaling and recognition processes.
In our research group, in the Chemical Glycobiology Research Group (Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Debrecen) several bioactive monosaccharide derivatives have been synthesized among them one can find efficient inhibitors of glycogen phosphorylases and the sodium dependent glucose cotransporters.
Sugar derived half-sandwich complexes of platinum-group metal ions with antineoplastic and antimicrobial effects have also been synthesized and patented.
In our present research, we plan to extend the SAR study of these complexes, and to this end the preparation of anhydro-aldose (thio)semicarbazones, amidrazones, N4-glycosyl-(thio)semicarbazones, aldonolactone (thio)semicarbazones and their new platinum-group metal complexes.
This research work gives the PhD student a good opportunity to learn about the process of designing glycomimetics, the application and/or development of synthetic methods used in the field of carbohydrates, as well as structural elucidation methods.
Biological, physiological, X-ray crystallographic and computational investigations of the new compounds will be performed in collaborations with teams of the University of Debrecen, University of Thessaly, Larissa (Greece) and University of Central Lancashire, Preston (United Kingdom).
