témavezetés leírása
The biodiversity of rare, unique soda lakes, pans and wetlands (alkaline soda chemical type of inland standing saline water) have a distinct ecosystem structures and community composition compared with other inland saline waters, because of their multiple extreme environmental properties. In hydrobiological terms, the benthic and planktonic community, the composition of the characteristic flora and fauna reflect the strong structuring role of physical, chemical drivers e.g. alkalinity, turbidity and hypertrophic state, as well as waterbirds have an important role in nutrient cycles and trophic systems of these aquatic habitats. Based on the latest scientific reviews soda lakes and pans were found only in limited numbers, regions and locations in Eurasia, which reflects their rare distribution and vulnerability on the largest continent. Therefore, a comparative mapping of the global distribution, types and hydrobiological characteristics of soda lake ecosystems is being carried out with the assistance of the International Society for Salt Lake Research (ISSLR), building on published references, international data sources, remote sensing databases and GIS development in arid, semi-desert and desert ecosystems on the World. This thematic references relation with soda lakes and pans is still missing in many regions, although references for ecological state, ecosystem function modelling methods and detailed conservation management experiments are completely available in Hungary. This research programme can provide a comparative mapping and modelling on a worldwide scale for the assessment of ecological state and ecosystem functions between any continent and soda/saline environment as a new scientific result and fundamental database for environmental management. The specific PhD topic will be developed by personal consultation with the applicant.
