Preparation of robust coordination compounds of heavy p-block elements

We plan the synthesis and chemical characterisation of novel coordination compounds of selected non-transition metal heavy elements (e.g. Tl, Ga, Bi) with organic and inorganic (polyoxometallate) ligands. The compounds can potentially be used in medical imaging (PET, SPECT) and/or therapy (with beta or alpha-radiating isotopes). We are going to make new (CN)5Pt-Tl-L complexes (L = tridentate ligand with hetero-donor atoms), where the Tl-atom is the chiral center. Basic requirements for the safe application of metal complexes in medication are the high thermodynamic stability and the kinetic inertness of the compounds resulting in low toxicity and high effectiveness. Metal binder ligands with optimal number of donor atoms suitable for the given metal ions, having optimal structure may fulfill these conditions. The contribution of chemists involves the design and synthesis of the ligands and the chemical characterisation of the complexes. In case of the chiral Tl-complexes the lack of related data in the literature may somewhat increase the risk of failing the goal (i.e. preparation of suitable stable, inert and rigid complexes). There is a hard competition in the field of metal complexes related to medical application due to the close relation between theragnostics and the molecular radiotheraphy. Our group is a participant in this international competition. At the same time we cooperate with leading teams all over the word. Among others we have strong background in coordination chemistry including determination of stability constants, formation and dissociation kinetics and ligand exchange studied by NMR. To our best knowledge, the suggested way to synthesise chiral Tl-centres is a new concept. Positive results may earn compliments of both chemists and physicists.
