"In the field of pharmaceutical chemistry, most research focuses on the implementation of novel technology, such as continuous flow processes, into the outdated manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). However, the main limit for the wider acceptance for the new and more efficient techniques is simply, the cost of the development and maintenance. 3D-printing has attracted much attention in many fields of life. Various technologies are available for printing, such as fused filament fabrication (FFF) or stereolithography (SLA), which can be used to print not only chemically resistant, but, high temperature and pressure resistant materials with almost complete design freedom.
The aim of the project is to develop 3D printed continuous flow reactors using SLA printing with different chemically resistant resins. First a comprehensive chemical, temperature and pressure stability study of the reactors printed from various resins will be investigated. The reactors will then be tested in API synthesis. The transparent reactors will also be tested in photochemical reactions using professional 3D printed photoboxes with built-in, interchangeable LED lamp modules that can be changed according to the wavelength required for the reaction.
