The AdS/CFT correspondence is based on a conjecture of Maldacena which states that the supersymmetric IIB string theory on the ten dimensional AdS_5xS^5 curved background is equivalent to the four dimensional calN=4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. This duality is of the strong-weak coupling type: the strongly coupled gauge theory is mapped to weakly interacting strings and vice versa, that is why it is so difficoult to test. Integrability discovered on both sides of the correspondence in the N ->infty limit makes hope to test the conjecture and to calculate nonperturbative quantities in both theories. The applicants job is to develop further this rapidly evolving and fascinating research area.
