The proportion of scab resistant cultivars in Hungarian apple orchards is outstandingly high, but all these cultivars carry the Rvi6 resistant gene. The efficiency of the Rvi6 gene has drastically decreased with the emergence of a new pathogen race. Cultivars with more durable resistance can be developed by pyramiding different R-genes in a single cultivar, so it is an important task to identify new resistant cultivars and R-genes. Previously, we have detected several traditional apple cultivars in the Soroksár apple gene bank which have good field resistance against scab based on 11 years of data, e.g. ‘Angyal Dezső’, ‘Sándor cár’ or ‘Tafota’. In the frame of the research the following tasks will be carried out: (1) a mapping progeny will be created by crossing the traditional cultivars potentially carrying major R-genes with susceptible reference cultivars; (2) besides field assessments in the Soroksár apple gene bank the resistance of the traditional cultivars and cross progenies will be tested by artificial inoculations, for which monosporic Venturia inaequalis isolates with specific virulence factors are already available; (3) genetic studies will be conducted on the newly detected R-genes. The work will clarify the efficiency and genetic background of the promising traditional apple cultivars of the Soroksár apple gene bank. Based on the results new selections might be identified for further breeding work, or for ecological farming.
