The by-products of forest harvesting and wood processing can contain significant amounts of recoverable chemicals. The detection, extraction and recovery of these substances from the appropriate tissues can be significant not only from a scientific but also from an industrial, waste management and environmental point of view, as several examples and applications demonstrate.
The chemical composition of by-products of important industrial wood species used in Hungary will be investigated, with a special focus on antioxidant compounds. After appropriate extraction, compounds can be used for wood industry (e.g. wood preservatives), food industry (e.g. preservatives, food supplements) applications. Other parameters of the treated by-product will also be investigated for further use.
Research objective: to investigate the availability of the selected by-product for selected wood species. Chemical analysis of extractives by different methods, analysis of physiological effects of extracts (e.g. fungal resistance), fire retardant and other technological parameters were investigated and possible applications will be outlined.
