The role of community-based institutions in disaster preparedness has gained increasing recognition, yet systematic evaluations of their impact remain limited. Educational institutions, religious centers (such as churches and mosques), Red Crescent centers, and nongovernmental organizations are uniquely positioned to deliver disaster education and training to vulnerable populations. These institutions not only provide platforms for structured learning but also carry cultural and social authority that can influence community resilience and behavioral change.
This PhD research will examine and compare the contributions of two or more of these institutions to disaster preparedness, assessing their relative effectiveness in enhancing knowledge, shaping risk perceptions, and fostering adaptive practices. The study will adopt a multicultural and cross-institutional perspective, recognizing that cultural norms, trust levels, and institutional legitimacy affect how disaster education is received and acted upon. Using mixed methodologies, including surveys, interviews, and case studies, the project aims to provide both individual and comparative assessments of institutional impact.
By bridging insights from disaster risk reduction, education, and sociology, the research will generate evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, humanitarian organizations, and educators. The study will highlight how different community institutions can complement each other in building resilience and how multicultural considerations can inform the design of more inclusive disaster preparedness strategies.
