Surface compression methods (shot peening, ball burnishing, slide diamond burnishing, etc.) are widely utilized techniques in the manufacturing chain of steel components, especially in the vehicle industry. Such processes can reduce surface roughness; they introduce compressive residual stresses and increase hardness which lengthen the lifetime of the components. At the near surface regions, the grains eventually become plastically deformed, while the deeper regions, only elastic stresses are conserved. The objective of the PhD research topic is to investigate, how such processes affect the corrosion resistance of steel components. The specimens needed for the research are available, and infrastructure is available to perform any further treatments, if needed. Equipment for corrosion tests, microstructure characterization methods are also available at the host institute or at our partners.
