The surface position of a syntactic constituent may not be the same as the position where the constituent is interpreted. If this is the case, the two positions may be linked in various ways, for which syntacticians use labels like “control”, “raising” or “wh-movement”, among others. These differ in terms of their thematic properties, finiteness, agreement patterns, etc. The research goal is to investigate such constructions and gain insights about their features, working mechanisms, and typological patterns both within and across languages.
