Synthesis of Novel Transition Metal Carbene Complexes for Value-Added Catalytic Transformations of Olefins

"The overarching goal of this project is to develop innovative transition-metal carbene complexes for value-added catalytic transformations of olefins. The research will concentrate on three strategically important reaction classes: (1) alkane dehydrogenation, (2) olefin metathesis, and (3) alkene isomerization. These processes enable efficient catalytic modification of olefins, even at low catalyst loadings, and exhibit well-established mechanisms with strong industrial relevance.
Our approach aims to harness these transformations for the valorization of polyolefin waste. Specifically, we envision partial dehydrogenation of polyolefins, followed by tandem isomerization–metathesis (ISOMET) to convert the resulting olefin mixtures into lower-molecular-weight alkenes suitable as versatile chemical feedstocks. To realize this concept, we will tailor existing catalyst platforms (e.g., Vaska, Grubbs, Grotjahn complexes) and develop new systems incorporating our proprietary nucleophilic carbene ligands.

This research builds on our group’s significant achievements in the field: our ISOMET methodology has been published in leading journals and underpins multiple international collaborations. The project not only advances fundamental catalysis but also addresses critical national and EU sustainability targets.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience in preparative organic chemistry, with strong interest and skills in organometallic synthesis and the study of reactive intermediates in catalytic cycles."
