"This research aims to develop new synthetic approaches for carbenes and their adducts by employing previously unexplored metathesis and redox reactions. While the literature predominantly describes acid–base reactions as the main route to isolable carbenes, our goal is to investigate alternative methodologies that may prove essential for accessing carbene ligands with unprecedented structural motifs. These strategies could also facilitate the development of stoichiometric or even catalytic transformations involving carbenoid intermediates. Key steps include the synthesis of suitable carbene precursors, mechanistic studies of carbene formation, derivatization (trapping) of the resulting carbenes, and comprehensive characterization of all novel compounds. In this context, potential carbene precursors may include adducts formed between the future carbene synthon and: chalcogen elements (O, S, Se), nucleophiles (Nu-H), Lewis acids (boranes), or other small molecules (H₂, CO₂, SO₂).
The fundamental significance of this topic is underscored by the frequent publication of novel carbene ligand architectures in high-impact journals, accompanied by substantial citation metrics. Our research group places strong emphasis on the rapid translation of fundamental discoveries into building blocks for sustainable chemical processes. For instance, the development of carbene complexes may enable the discovery of novel catalyst systems for sustainable chemical recycling of persistent plastic waste.
An ideal candidate for this project should possess hands-on experience in preparative organic synthesis and be proficient in organometallic methodologies and specialized laboratory techniques.
