Natural raw materials as plants contain a wide range and type of valuable and biologically active compounds of
industrial interest from the food, nutraceutical, cosmetic or even pharmaceutical sectors. In recent years our
attention turned to the separation of valuable bioactive for different purposes from a single plant raw material.
Besides understanding the possibilities of producing high-added value extracts from natural resources, refining
the crude extracts is also required. The task of the PhD fellow will be to develop an applicable combination of
various high-tech extraction methods (e.g. supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwaveassisted extraction or pressurized liquid extraction) and conventional extraction methods (e.g. steam distillation,
maceration or Soxhlet-extraction) to obtain crude extracts highly enriched in the target component. The
experimental results will serve as the basis of optimised technology development. The bioactive enriched extracts
will be the basis of several purification steps to isolate the target compounds. The development of a suitable
purification scheme is also the task of the PhD fellow.
