Cell division is the very fundamental property whereby two daughter cells originate from one mother cell. Without cell division, life cannot exist. Yet, uncontrolled proliferation underlies serious diseases such as cancer. Drugs that arrest cell proliferation are often used to treat this condition. Many drugs initially manage to slow down cell division. However, on the long run often cells recover the ability of dividing, regardless of the presence of drugs. Cells apply different strategies, at different time-scales, to circumvent the effect of these anti-mitotic drugs. We investigate how cells escape from the arrest induced by drug treatment with a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. In particular, we perform live-cell imaging experiments using microfluidics devices, and we use also classical cell biology techniques, next-generation sequencing, and long-term lab evolution experiments. Projects involve both an experimental and a data-analysis/modeling part, depending on the curiosity and skills of the candidate.
