The planned research focuses on fossil diatom analysis of short sediment cores taken form Lake Balaton. The sediment cores cover the last 200 yr of the lake’s history. The doctoral candidate will analyse diatom assemblages using both classical morphological and DNA methods.
Light microscopic, scanning electron microscopic training will be provided by the Balaton Limnological Institute, while DNA metabarcoding will be done at ELTE. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the natural diatom flora and water quality conditions of Lake Balaton in its subbasins, examine the trajectory of diatom assemblage changes, and in collaboration with the Water Authorities determine possible water quality protection measures that help moving the aquatic ecosystem towards its natural state.
