A well-established claim of institutional economics is that economic development of a country is first of all determined by its institutions, the formal and informal rules of society. Within this broad proposition, however, there are quite a few questions to be answered. The general question of this research is which institutions are important and what are their causal mechanisms. The answer can be different for different regions or time periods, leaving much room for research. The following questions may be researched within this topic (possibly in a more specific way in accordance with the research question): To what extent and how do formal and informal institutions affect economic development defined broadly or narrowly? Are policies as important as institutions? Which policies and which institutions contribute to economic development and how much? How do the roles of such institutions and policies change during the catching-up process of a less developed country? How can the size of the effect of institution and policies be quantified? The research requires theoretical as well as empirical work. The theoretical research may include synthesizing, summarizing the literature on “institutions and development”, and possibly the development of a model that is aimed at explaining the causal mechanism of the institutions in questions. The empirical part could be a kind of regression analysis based on the conclusion drawn with the model,

but the empirical method to be applied will depend on the question that will be raised, the region or country that will be investigated, or even the institutions that are analysed. Qualitative comparative empirical method might also be needed.
