Plant viruses can cause many diseases in our crops. Climate change and globalization keep plant host – virus ecosystems in a continual change. This can induce sensitivity of not only the new, but also the traditionally grown crops for viruses, which were present in the natural flora but until now were harmless. New varieties, imported because of some favorable features, can be sources of viruses, which can endanger plants of the endemic flora. Virus-crop ecosystem can also be severely affected by endemic and invading weeds. These plants, beside their competitive effect, can also serve as a virus reservoirs and can help spread and enhance the persistence of different plant viruses. To be aware of these potential risk, we should know viruses hosted by crops and also weeds in the country. Diagnosis / detection of virus and viroid diseases at the early stage of infection helps in further prevention of spread of the disease and also helps in routine screening. Tha aimed research will focus on weeds belog to Solonaceae. Filed surveys at Keszthely in the vicinity of filed used for potato breeding and different part of Hungary will be conducted. For virus diagnostics traditional and high throughput methods like high-throughput sequencing will be carried out and the results gained after bioinformatic analysis of the data will be validated. As a result information about the presenting viruses and about the possible virus reservoir role of the investigated weeds will revealed.
