Structure-to-activity relationship studies on cytotoxic and cytoprotective effects of chalcone and curcuminoid analogues

In our earlier studies, several chalcone analogues and curcuminoids showed cancer cell cytotoxic effect. On the other hand, they showed a structure-dependent antioxidant (cytoprotective) effect as well. In the framework of the present program, the aim of our study is to analyze how the steric, electronic and hydrophobic properties of the compounds affect their cytotoxic and cytoprotective activities. For determination of the relevant physico-chemical properties chromatographic and spectroscopic methods are applied. The antiproliferative effects are tested on different cell cultures.
