Title: LIDARs to evaluate the quality of pavement markings

Pavement markings and signs are important traffic control devices, used to
guide and regulate traffic movement through visual information presented for guiding human
driven cars and autonomous vehicles now and in the near future. Signs and markings are
made with retroreflective materials to enhance visibility, particularly at night. Yet comes a
challenging task for researchers and many transportation agencies to evaluate and assess the
road marking retroreflectivity for maintenance reasons. While visual evaluation can often be
subjective and inconsistent, and field measurement techniques can be time-consuming and
dangerous as a result of having to restrict traffic during measurement, finding a new method
for retroreflectivity evaluation became a necessity. Existing high-cost LIDAR sensors return information as an infrared reflective intensity which are calibrated through specific algorithms and software relative to the sensor type or brand which can deliver a consistent result. Studies are ongoing to prove that middle/low-cost LIDAR sensors which are mainly used for autonomous vehicles can detect and analyse a correct reflective intensity of the pavement marking after undergoing a process of calibration for lane markings and different kind of pavement signalization in different weather condition.
The aim of this research is to test and to determine whether there is a consistent relation between LIDAR sensors raw intensity data and retroreflectivity of pavement markings.
