Control is a success factor for businesses. Planning, monitoring, analysing what is needed and what is factual, and organising the flow of information can help managers make better and more informed decisions, thus improving the production and financial performance of their firms.
Many managers of SMEs are not aware of the importance of management controlling in the life of the firm, they believe that controlling is basically not used. But they have a vision for the distant future, buy a new machine that they will use for more than 5 years, estimate the necessary profit, plan the use of human resources, inform internal and external stakeholders about their activities. These managers are indeed working with management controlling tools they are not familiar with. How successful would their activities be if they used controlling consciously? The aim of this research is to assess the differences between SMEs that are aware of and use controlling tools and those that are not aware of the importance and usefulness of this management control system.
