Feed composition has a paramount importance in the normal development and maintenance of the healthy adult organism. In this doctoral program, we will investigate how the composition of feed, and specifically, the quantity of some amino-acids (e.g. methionine, leucine, aginine) affect the fundamental physiological processes that regulate growth, metabolism, and the cellular and organismal ageing. It is known from research on invertebrate model species, that the evolutionarily highly conserved signalling pathway, mTOR, which is present in all multicellular life forms, is very sensitive to the availability of essential amino acids and regulates cellular metabolism. Although this nutrient-sensing, regulatory pathway is known to have vital importance, almost nothing is known about its functioning in birds. This research topic therefore aims at studying by integrating different system levels how amino acids in feed affect the mTOR pathway, what consequences this may have on organismal phenotypic traits (growth, carbohydrate metabolism, immunity, stress responsiveness and ageing). We will uncover these physiological relationships on Japanese quails. These investigations therefore are expected to provide significant results not only for fundamental research, but their direct applicability for industrial use is also reasonable.
