The interpretation of sustainable development as a response mechanism to anthropogenic impacts on the biosphere is broad. International conventions, studies, and research defines and interprets sustainability strategies and policy through varying approaches. The dimension of sustainability is wide, as in addition to the environmental and economic pillars, social sustainability has rightfully come to the forefront as a significant issue.
Agroecology (AE) has emerged as a sustainable agriculture approach based on a dialogue of different knowledge systems between popular wisdom and science, which links a scientific discipline, agricultural practices and a social movement that together represent a framework and tools for agricultural transition. Increasing agroecological practices at the farm level and within the food chain is suggested as a strategy for the practical implementation of sustainable development of the agricultural sector.
The objective of the proposed topic is to analyse how AE contributes towards sustainability of the food system, to identify AE practices that contribute to soil ecosystems nurture, nutrient recycling, energy conservation and the dynamic management of biodiversity. The other assessed aspect of AE within this research topic is its role in social movement in order to reshape the relations within the food system, promoting proximity and solidarity between consumers and producers.
