The role of neuropeptides in the neuroendocrine regulation of adaptive processes.

description
The evolutionary process evaluated different survival strategies over time. In highly developed vertebrates successful adaptation heavily relies on the resilience of the individual. From rigid, instinct-driven behavioral patterns - through emotions and affections - the developmental process led to cognition dominated and highly specific reponses. Hormones, neurotransmitters and neuromodulators all play an important role in the regulation of these nuroendocrine processes. My experiments focus on endocrine, affective and emotional control, the flexibility of which is provided by neuropeptides. The alteration of the expression of neuropeptides also appears to have crucial impact on the pathophysiology of Alzheimer''s disease, Lewy body''s dementia and postraumatic stress disorder.
