One of the most widely applied quantitative climate reconstruction techniques uses fossil pollen assemblages from lake and mire sediments. In scope of this research project the PhD student will collect Late Glacial and Holocene pollen records from East Central Europe (ECE) and compile a georeferenced database together with extracting relevant surface pollen samples from the European Modern Pollen Database. His main task is to analyse a new set of lake surface sediment samples from East-Central Europe in order to improve the pollen training set. This will be followed by the application of various transfer functions using classical and bioclimatic variables in order to test which climatic variable(s) can be reconstructed by the fossil pollen assemblages during the Late Glacial and Holocene in ECE, an area under strong continental climatic influence today. The aim of the research is to reveal area specific climatic trends, compare pollen based reconstructions with chironomid based reconstructions and climate model data, and determine the amplitude of climate change during rapid warming intervals of the studied time period.
