According to recent studies, experiencing incongruency prior the test trial can increase the level of cognitive control. It is assumed that in this case negative affects play a central role in the enhancement of cognitive control. Although the question has high importance for the understanding of cognitive control, there is an apparent lack in the empirical analyses.
