Description of research topic:

At the end of the 1980’s, Hobby and McKenzie elaborated a powerful theory for the study of finite algebras. They called their theory tame congruence theory. Tame congruence theory had
been based on earlier results in universal algebra, commutator theory and lattice theory. Within the framework of tame congruence theory, Hobby and McKenzie gave characterizations to six naturally defined classes of varieties. All of these classes of varieties can be defined by sets of certain identities called Malcev conditions. The aim of the research proposed is to investigate the structure of the algebras in these varieties and to apply the results obtained in the study of the computational complexity of some well known problems in computer science.
