A three year long EU-funded PhD position is available at the Optical and Microwave Telecommunication Lab of Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Hungary). The position is part of the FIWIN5G (FIber-Wireless Integrated Networks for 5th Generation delivery Initial Training Network, fiwin5g.eu) Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network. FIWIN5G is a consortium of 10 leading European research institutions that will involve 15 PhD students working collaboratively to develop integrated optical fibre technologies to support 5th generation wireless networks. Within this project, the candidate will be part of an international team of ten European countries working together.
The research project aims to realize theoretical investigation, simulation and experimental study of optical fibre transport of radio signals for 5G wireless/mobile systems. Based on comparing theoretical and experimental results, optimum radio and optical modulation formats are to be achieved. First the different transmission methods are investigated in simulation environment, then transmission qualities of novel modulation methods are studied. Next complete radio over fibre system simulation will be built in the applied simulation environment. Experimental investigation will validate the simulation results. Based on the results of the investigations optimum approaches will be selected for 5G applications. Recommendations for optimal optical fibre based 5G backhaul system will be proposed.
Requirements
• Fluent English
• The candidates have not resided (or carried out his/her main activity e.g. work, studies, etc.) in Hungary for more than 12 months in the last three years immediately prior to the reference start date (01/09/2015).
• Applicants should be in the first 4 years of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the MSc degree.
• Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the PhD programme at BME. PhD scholarship holders must register as PhD students at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Students who have a Master''s degree can apply for a PhD position
• Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study program and wide-ranging events offered by the FiWIN5G Marie-Curie ITN_ETN, as well as active involvement in Optical Microwave Telecommunication research group, Budapest, Hungary.
Benefits
• The scholarship is offered for a period of three years.
• Competitive salary to cover living and mobility costs
Successful candidates will be paid according to EU standards for Early Stage Researchers (about €28,400 gross yearly salary plus mobility and family allowances if eligible).
• Opportunities for international collaboration and travel to academic and industrial partners
• Secondment placement with a network partner
The project will involve a secondment to G-INP (Grenoble, France) for up to 6 months from January 2017 for experimental evaluations of systems to validate the theoretical and simulation results obtained at BME concerning the transmission of radio signals over fibre.
• The project is conducted in collaboration with Ericsson Hungary R&D, HU
