Description of the research topic:
Fungal terpenoid metabolites, such as the membrane contituent ergosterol, prenyl groups of certain proteins or the ubiquinone and carotenoids, are synthesized via the common mevalonate-isoprenoid pathway. Activity of the central enzymes and the encoding genes therefore affect so important biological processes as the maintenance of the membrane structure, susceptibility to different antifungal agents, morphogenesis, dimorphism, adaptation to the environmental changes, or production of certain metabolites (e.g. carotenoids). Functional analysis of the key genes and examination of their regulation are planned. The study includes the modification of the pathway and the analysis of the metabolite production and morphogenesis of the fungi in this system.
