Description of the research topic:
Scholarly discourse on the representation of travel, cultural and literary history reviews have accumulated a wealth of banalities and astute observations on the archetypes of exile, exile, wilderness and sea travel, from the war routes, pilgrimage and peregrination to the contrast between tourists and sublime travellers. Writing, reading and travelling were closely linked by the early modern ars peregrinandi, and this relationship, though in different contexts, has endured: Kant, for example, thought that travel could be replaced by reading, that is, by imagination, and there is also the notion that travel and reading/writing are almost analogous, in that the traveller always reads and translates the traces of previous travellers (Charles Grivel). A doctoral dissertation on this subject could be based on 20th-century and contemporary travel literature texts, from Kosztolányi and Márai to Endre Kukorelly and László Krasznahorkai.
