Description of the research topic:

The proposed research topic invites prospective PhD candidates to explore the development and contemporary understanding of the notion of the welfare state, social welfare, state provided welfare provisions, and the institutional framework of providing welfare services (healthcare, old-age care, public education, social housing, etc.) in English speaking countries or in Eastern Europe with reference to their representation in television and cinema. Research should include interdisciplinary perspectives including moral philosophy, social and political sciences as well as screen studies and also investigate how representations influence attitudes towards low-income or otherwise marginalized social groups, their value systems, lifestyles and agency. Research proposals should ideally explore case studies with reference to a corpus of relevant films, television series and shows about good practices in the welfare system that guarantee its sustainability or, on the contrary, screen depictions of areas of crises and systemic problems.
