Description of the research topic:
The automotive industry has undergone a significant shift in recent years, primarily propelled by the new regulations set forth by the European Union. These regulations, which stipulate that all new cars entering the market by 2035 should have zero direct carbon dioxide emissions, have been a game-changer. In response to these changes, significant companies strive to adapt by establishing new plants and forming new supplier networks. The shift towards electromobility has been a popular solution, leading to a wave of foreign capital investments in Hungary that have had a significant international impact over the past decade.
The research is primarily focused on understanding the factors that influence the location selection of a specific automotive operator when establishing a new plant. This involves defining the scope of the companies under study, determining their national and international positions, and identifying their distinguishing characteristics. The research also delves into the economic effects of existing and announced investments, the domestic and global market environment, innovation, and various manufacturing philosophies and value chains. The study aims to shed light on the transformation of the Hungarian economy and employment and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structural changes in the domestic electromobility-related industry. The location- and internalization-based models of FDI offer the theoretical background of the research.
