Description of the research topic:

The traditional approach to criminological theory lies on a sociological fundamentum. However, from the second half of the 20th century it has become obvious that it is crucial to introduce a psychological angle to research in order to analyze and understand some special fields in criminology. Although the regular use of psychology in the field of law only became prevalent in the last decades, there are scripts from German researchers already from the 18th century discussing the possible use of psychology in legal theory and practice.
It is apparent now that for the sake of understanding and preventing delinquency it is essential to study the individual path of offenders that led them to commit crimes, especially in cases of murder, sexual offences, domestic violence, bullying and addiction-related crimes. Furthermore, psychology has a significant role in the analysis and prevention efforts towards terrorism and understanding the motivation of lone offenders. Resiliency is an exciting new research field, which deals with an individual’s ability to flexibly adopt to chronic negative circumstances, even severe traumas and to regain mental and physical health. Results in this field can be beneficial for both crime prevention and victimology.
Integrating the results of traditional criminology with psychological approaches are in accordance with the efforts of the Postgraduate Program, that students shall have the chance to gain an extensive approach embracing many fields of science, so that the outcome of their researches will stand on an interdisciplinary ground having an academic and practical value at the same time.
