Description of the research topic:
Although groundwater is much less understood than surface water, groundwater is a crucial water reserve for the future and essential in managing extreme hydrological events such as floods and droughts. We can use all available reserves, including aquifers, surface depressions and water bodies, to store excess water during heavy rainfall. However, to do that properly, we must replicate nature's functioning, making it sustainable and environmentally respectful. Therefore, besides natural scientific solutions, we need a multidisciplinary approach to ensure a safe water supply for inhabitants, ecosystems, and agriculture, that is a severe societal and economic issue. Students with a vital geography (GIS) background must implement nature-based solutions at the settlement level. The task is to research the upscaling and optimising possibilities of NB-MAR (Managed Aquifer Recharge) solutions, considering the natural and planning conditions.
