In recent years novel technologies of geovisualization and visual analytics have evolved, but the map still remains the primary tool to present, interpret and understand spatial data. The traditional printed map is gradually substituted by interactive, cloud-based, multiple virtual displays, which are highly dynamic interfaces of the exploration of mass geospatial data. The better understanding of the processes of visual cognition, especially map-related tasks contributes to the design of more effective cartographic and visual interfaces, as well as to the research of issues relating to human visual and spatial thinking. The proposed experimental cognitive cartographic research addresses the development of a theory of human-centered visualization based on sound empirical findings, which are results of cognitive experiments (e.g. collecting eye tracking and other sensory data, combined with modern brain imaging technologies). The conduction of this research topic requires interdisciplinary approach.
