Description of the research topic:
Metastases of the central nervous system – the majority of which originate from lung cancer, breast cancer (mainly the triple negative form) and melanoma – are life threatening pathologies with limited therapeutic options. Tumor cells invading the brain parenchyma have to extravasate through the blood-brain barrier and to survive in the hostile brain microenvironment. By using in vitro and in vivo models, the project is focused on the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of brain metastasis formation. Different molecular biology, biochemical and advanced microscopy (confocal, two-photon and superresolution) techniques will be applied to elucidate the role of various signaling mechanisms, proteolytic enzymes and brain-derived factors in the interaction between host cells and metastasizing cancer cells.
