Description of the research topic:

The clinical application of narrative has been recognized by Bálint (1991), Kleiman (1989), Brody (2002), and Montgomery Hunter (1993). The application of narrative is based on the hypothesis that the concept of illness and communication by physicians follows a different narrative logic than that of patients. In traditional doctor-patient communication, such as in the establishment of a diagnosis, the "voice" of the patient is often lost in the dialogue. Therefore, a narrative-based approach complements evidence-based healing processes by emphasizing and analyzing the importance of personal experience.
Narrative-based medicine and healthcare utilize empirical approaches from anthropological, philosophical, and linguistic sciences to provide explanations for the subjective and objective perspectives of health and illness, as well as the personal and institutional, and societal dimensions.
The creation of meaning is a fundamental determinant of diseases and traumatic events. The formal manifestation of this process is narrative, which provides a causal and temporal framework for the reader, revealing the narrator's personality, motivations, and worldview. Spontaneously told stories and narrative interviews are natural expressions of patients, providing researchers with honest, lived experiences and data. The questionnaire-based technique of quantitative research may not always uncover patients' most personal opinions and thoughts on a given problem or situation. The use of narrative interviews seeks to break through this limitation and provide explanations for specific life situations.

Narrative analysis and interpretation are not purely scientific disciplines, although the techniques applied by social sciences follow strict rules of sampling and data processing. Additionally, narratives based on spontaneous verbal expressions provide researchers with objective linguistic material, and the application of qualitative analysis techniques meets the criteria of scientific research.
From the patients' perspective, storytelling may lead to a better understanding of themselves and their illness, while from the professionals' point of view, it may involve identifying patients' motivations and feelings, as well as shedding light on the hidden aspects of their illness.
