Description of the research topic:

Recently, estimates suggest that mental, neurological, and substance use disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, dementia, alcohol dependence) account for 13% of the global burden of disease, with mental illnesses representing the largest burden, surpassing both cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Nutritional psychiatry is a rapidly developing field that explores the relationship between nutrition and mental health, offering possibilities for prevention and therapy. Over the past decade, the number of epidemiological studies examining the associations between dietary habits and mental health conditions has steadily increased. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have shown that individuals consuming a more Westernized or heavily processed diet have a higher risk of developing psychiatric symptoms, such as depression and anxiety.

Numerous food and food components have been studied to determine how dietary changes can positively impact mental health. Suboptimal nutrition plays a role in the underlying pathology of behavioral disorders and can hinder treatment and recovery. Both macro- and micronutrient deficiencies have been linked to increased behavioral problems, and dietary modification, dietary factors, and dietary supplements have proven effective in treating certain neuropsychiatric disorders.

The aim of the topic is to examine the effects of nutritional factors and diets on various mood and impulse disorders, including depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia therapy.
