Description of the research topic:

The use of 3D printing is also becoming more widespread in healthcare. The pharmaceutical sciences are no exception, as several drug barriers could be overcome, and an alternative way to produce customized or even modified drug delivery systems could be provided. For example, the first and only 3D printed drug - Spritam® (levetiracetam tablets), a milestone in drug research 3D printing technology, was approved by the FDA in 2015.
In the day-to-day supply of drugs, it can be a problem that it is difficult to accurately dose the active ingredient in some of its drug therapies. With the help of 3D printing, it is possible to prepare a preparation with the active ingredient concentration required by the patients in different dosage forms. Another critical option could be to reduce the number of medications for patients who take 5 to 10 medications per day, and 3D printing could be used to print multiple active ingredients in a single tablet, taking into account incompatibilities. Last but not least, it could be a significant breakthrough in the production of orphan drugs, as they are intended to treat rare diseases in a small group of patients, making it unprofitable to produce large quantities of these drugs. Furthermore, medicines printed with such technology can be used mainly in personalized therapies; therefore, their application in the public drug supply and hospitals and clinics would be the most suitable. The candidate is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing drug delivery systems that can be used in modern 3D printing technology.
