Description of the research topic:
The research focuses on an art phenomenon that has characterized monumental paintings from
the early centuries to the present: in the case of murals painted on the external or internal walls of
buildings – Renaissance frescoes or decoration of firewalls of tenement houses in modern cities –
the painting and the architecture form together an integral unit. The painting is part of the
architectural space in which it is created: the decorations on the wall of Medieval chapels, Baroque
palaces or halls of contemporary buildings are inseparable from the architecture, together they
form an artwork together. During the research process, examples taken from previous centuries
help the interpretation of relationships between modern architecture and the accompanying visual
phenomena. The decoration or unadornedness of a built space carries a particular meaning. The
painting’s tool can be the illusion: to change the spatial boundaries of reality, structures, expand or
narrow them. Murals are detached from the wall since ancient Roman times. What changes does
this type of intervention cause? Does a building decoration convert into a panel painting?
