Description of the research topic:

Soil liquefaction has caused engineering problems in many places all over the world including Hungary too. In the everyday practice, the assessment of liquefaction potential is mostly done in an empirical way, based on in situ test results and empirical correlations. Such calculations are easy to perform, but it allow limited possibilities when one want to evaluate how the engineering activities (e.g. soil improvement, deep foundations, change in stress level) alter the risk of liquefaction, or what are the consequences of liquefaction to the nearby soil mass or structures.
There are some material models (e.g. UBCSand, hypoplastic model with intergranular strain, PM4Sand) available that are theoretically capable of modelling soil liquefaction; but the parameter determination of those models are not always feasible, even in cases when sophisticated in situ and laboratory tests are available. In the last year – due to a Hungarian nuclear power plant project and an ongoing PhD research – significant experiences have been accumulated related to the soil liquefaction, but in the meantime many new problems have emerged. The most important among them is to find a numerical or material model that can describe the process of soil liquefaction, the consequences caused by it and which provides results that are in good agreement with the empirical experiences (i.e. in situ and laboratory test results).
The main goal of the research is to make progress in this field. The major points of the research are the following:
• Collection of all available measurement results from Hungary, and evaluation of the data with respect to the possibility of using them for numerical analyses;
• literature review of the available material models that are capable of computing soil liquefaction with special emphasis on the practical experiences and parameter determination;
• the numerical back analysis of the available laboratory and in situ tests, development a method for parameter fitting;
• evaluation of the results, proposal to the best practice to model the liquefaction of Hungarian soils.
