Description of the research topic:

Fatigue is one of the most dangerous and potential failure mode of existing old steel bridges. Increasing traffic volume on the highway and railway bridges can result in larger fatigue loading on the existing steel bridges. Therefore, the fatigue assessment has significant importance to ensure safe operation for the public transport network system. On the other side it is well-known that the determination of the fatigue life of steel structures has numerous uncertainties, which can be handled in the standards by highly conservative assumptions of the deterministic procedures. The aim of the current research is to improve the reliability of the fatigue life prediction by the development of novel assessment methods. Nowadays a prospective research methodology is the application of structural health monitoring systems for the determination of the stress range spectra and the actual traffic volume of the investigated bridges. Based on the measured data the fatigue assessment can be executed based on the real traffic volume of the bridge, which improves the reliability of the fatigue lifetime prediction. Another research strategy is the application of reliability assessment based fatigue design methods for the lifetime prediction, where both the loading and the resistance properties are determined based on stochastic approaches. The aim of the current research is to combine these two research directions in order to improve the current fatigue lifetime prediction methods of steel bridges.
In the frame of the PhD research an extensive literature review should be completed in the topic of the existing structural health monitoring systems on steel bridges, on the fatigue design procedures and reliability assessment based fatigue lifetime prediction methods. Research strategy contains the following main elements: (i) evaluation and analysis of measured data obtained from existing health monitoring systems of Hungarian bridges, (ii) development and validation of advanced numerical models, and (iii) development of an improved fatigue assessment method by the application of stochastic analysis.
