Description of the research topic:

Since the second half of the 90s, environmentally conscious product development has been helping to improve the environmental performance of products through life-cycle analysis. Mitigating global warming and the growth of CO₂ emissions is a new concept in the design and construction of buildings.
The research topic is interdisciplinary, it examines solutions for the creation of sustainability and a healthy built environment with regard to the criteria of the circular economy. The objective is to identify and evaluate the stages with the highest environmental impact and the resulting substances and/or processes throughout their life cycle, so from the extraction of raw materials through the production process to installation, then during the operation of the building until the end of its life. When developing the methodology, the focus is on cladding and covering materials among the construction products.
In the research, based on the interrelations between the design, technological solutions and use, the task is to examine the product characteristics in the laboratory and to evaluate the results that influence durability. By quantifying the surface structure and profile analysis, the maintenance and cleanability issues of the cladding, covering materials can be analyzed for long-term usability. By learning about the defects in the design of cladding and covering, also the potential for damage, the parameters of the material structure can be modified during the life-cycle based product development, taking into account energy savings and waste reduction.
Tasks to be performed during the research:
• analysis of the manufacturing challenges of traditional cladding, covering materials in terms of product durability, identifying production methods;
• scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of material structure, profile analysis, laboratory examination of surface design, testing of coatings;
• analysis of material defects, modeling the possibilities of damage that can affect the covering;
• systematisation of product innovations, taking into account the optimization of production;
• proposing possible development directions and intervention points based on test results of product characteristics affecting durability;
• the tasks involved in the generation and disposal of waste, the reduction of environmental and social impacts, as well as regulatory requirements;
• analysis of environmentally conscious design with the help of life cycle impact assessment, developing product-level scenarios;
• making proposals to increase circularity under the 9R framework and provide possibilities of using secondary raw materials;
• evaluating quantified data of Environmental product declarations, determining correlations in respect to the aspects of building ratings.
Based on the collected information, the role of the construction and building material industry in climate change can be mapped, recent changes and progress can be identified in terms of energy saving, reduction of fossil energy use, applying secondary raw materials and fuels derived from waste, that is concerning sustainability and preservation of the natural environment.
The research focuses on the analysis of the environmental impact of construction products and the development of environmental products, which must be examined from the perspective of the possibilities of production technology with the involvement of national and/or international manufacturers representing the selected product range.
