Description of the research topic:

Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease affecting not only the carbohydrate metabolism, but the fat- and protein metabolism too. The pathophysiology behind the condition based on the disturbance of the synthesis, release and action of insulin, which cause blood glucose elevation, thereby long-term complications. The predominant type of diabetes in children and adolescents is the autoimmune form with the absence of insulin, classified as type 1 diabetes, but thanks to the ever-widening diagnostic options, the new insights of the pathophysiology and genetics have changed our view of diabetology. Nowadays, due to the Covid pandemic too, the insulin-independent forms of diabetes gaining more and more space too.
The most common form of diabetes in children is type 1 diabetes, where the insulin replacement is the only therapeutic choice. We can choose from a wide range of insulin preparations and therapeutic regime. Our choice in therapy can be influenced by the age of the patient or the time passed since the diagnosis. In the other classes our possibilities in treatment are limited. We also need to calculate with alternative therapeutic options too.
Due to the development of technology (insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring) opened a new door to avoid long-term complications and achieve better quality of life.
The aim of our research is to review the change of the diabetes spectrum in the last 30 years and to explorate the advantages and disadvantages of the new clinical, technological and alternative therapeutic options.
