Description of the research topic:

Nanoparticle, in general, have been of great interest in the recent decades owing to their large surface-to-volume ratio, morphology-dependent optical and electronic properties as well as their high activity as catalysts. Control over the shape, size, composition and surface chemistry is one of the main cornerstones of preparing promising nanocrystals possessing well-defined physicochemical properties. In particular, plasmonic noble metal nanoparticles show one of the most interesting optical, electronic and catalytic properties. These advantageous properties can further be extended via enhancing the available surface area. In this research topic, synthesis, characterization and surface chemical modification of porous multicomponent metal nanoparticles are intended. Moreover, the porous building blocks are aimed to be assembled into porous network structures by utilizing various drying techniques. The work focuses on the tailored synthesis of coreless and core-shell noble metal nanoparticles consist of gold, palladium and platinum followed by their in-depth characterization, assembly into porous structures, and utilization in (electro)catalytic applications. Combination of different metals at the nanoscale, structuring the nanoparticle assemblies at the micro- and macroscale and revealing the composition-structure-property correlations are the main goals of the research making it a multidisciplinary topic utilizing the novel advances in colloid chemistry, material science, imaging techniques and light-matter interactions.
