Description of the research topic:
Air-abrasive cleaning is a common tool in professional oral care. During air-abrasion powders of different type and particle size are sprayed onto the tooth surface under high pressure, thus removing calculus, plaque and discoloration that strongly adhere to the tooth surface. However, during cleaning, the sand particles also reach the surface of the resin composite fillings, leaving small indentations on it, leading to a coarse texture. The roughened surface, however, allows for additional biofilm formation, thus impairing sustainable oral hygiene. The first stage of our studies investigates the roughening effect of air abrasion devices on the surface of different types of dental resin composites with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The aforementioned roughening effect can even be used to our advantage in repairing defective resin composite restorations. Since the new repair resin composite bond strength to the worn defective resin composite is weak, the surface roughening of the old composite is recommended to improve the adhesion between them. In the second phase of our measurements, we would investigate the bond strength of fresh resin composite adapted to aged, thermocyclized resin composite which have undergone a surface treatment with different types and sizes of air-abrasive powders. The bond strength measurements will be performed using a biaxial tensile strength testing machine.
