Description of the research topic:
Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) is characterized by the loss and degeneration of Adelta and C fibers, which are responsible for heat, pain and tactile sensation. Clinical symptoms correspond to these complaints, the dominant feature is the presence of neuropathic pain, which significantly affects patients' quality of life. Clinical data of patients at the PTE Neurology Clinic are collected and processed, furthermore prospective assessment is planned: clinical investigation (quantitative sensory tests), biomarker tests (serum neurofilament light chain determination) and neuropathological examinations are performed on patients' biopsy samples (e.g. colocalization of neuropeptides such as VIP, SP and receptors (e.g. TRPV1)). We introduce molecular biological methods for the study of gene expression (RNA and micro RNA measurement). In order to clarify the etiology, screening for Na-channel genes in idiopathic cases is planned. All these studies contribute to a better understanding of the pathomechanism of SFN.
