Description of the research topic:
The research offers a methodological development for the measurement of comorbidity. Building on the limitations of existing comorbidity indices, the study aims to include the length, order, co-occurrence, and timing of comorbid conditions in models measuring health outcomes with joint sequence analysis, a method adopted from the field of bioinformatics. The analysis will be conducted on medical data of patients with chronic kidney disease residing in districts of Baranya county. The study design consists of 4 research phases: data collection and disease categorisation; creation of comorbidity profiles with sequence data; clustering of disease sequences into comorbidity profile groups; use of comorbidity groups in the prediction of health outcomes. The results will potentially improve our understanding of the effects of comorbid conditions on health outcomes and support the development of improved comorbidity indices, which include the time element of diseases.
