Description of the research topic:

Microfluidics is a young branch of engineering, technology, and science that deals with the study and application of fluids in submillimeter-sized flow systems. Developments in the pharmaceutical industry are moving towards continuous processes. Crystallization of a drug is a key process in drug production that affects the applicability and efficacy of a particular drug. According to the laws of hydrodynamics in microfluidic systems, the mixing of liquids and substances dissolved in them can only take place by diffusion. Therefore, the crystallization processes realized in such a system can be well controlled. By changing the parameters of the microfluidic flow system, the crystallization process can be well controlled, so that the properties of the resulting crystals can also be influenced. Within the framework of the topic, we study theoretically and experimentally the effect of different flow parameters on the quality of the formed drug crystals, such as the size, habitus and morphology of the crystal structure (study of polymorphism).
