Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most frequently diagnosed disorders on the field of gastroenterology, which can lead to significant impairment of quality of life (e.g. social isolation or stigmatization), decreased work productivity and an increase of health care and societal costs. Its pathogenesis remained unknown, but probably among many others, altered gut microbiota plays a significant role. Intolerance to dairy products (mainly to lactose) and other foods is more frequent among patients with IBS than among healthy subjects. In our preliminary meta-analysis we proved the beneficial effect of low-FODMAP diet compared to standard IBS diet with high-FODMAP content, but the efficacy of a lactose restricted diet is still unclear in IBS. Data about lactase enzyme replacement is also controversial. In this project we evaluate correlation of carbohydrate maldigestion and malabsorption to IBS in different aspects by running prospective, multicentre, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial.
