Description of the research topic:

Starting mainly from hydroxy carotenoids, derivatives with potential biological activity are synthetized. The main focus lies on the synthesis of water-soluble carotenoids and carotenoid glycosides that can be important also in human medicine. The synthesis of conjugates of carotenoids with other bioactive molecules is also of great interest to us due to possible synergism. The carotenoids are isolated or obtained semisynthetically. Antioxidant activity and pharmacology of the new products are compared with those of the native carotenoids.
